Haritaki, as described in the Charak Samhita possesses five rasas, or tastes, out of the existing six as described in the Charak Samhita. These tastes are, respectively, sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent; Haritaki being devoid of the salty taste.
Haritaki is used as a natural cleanser of the digestive system. It improves the functioning of the liver spleen and the colon and hence it is widely used as a digestive tonic. Haritaki is also believed to improve intelligence and alertness in a person.
