Tagara - Indian Valerian Herb

Tagara Details : The Herb Tagara (known as Indian Valerian or Valeriana wallichi ) is a perennial herb, found in plenty in Western Himalayas in India, Pakistan and Afghanisthan.

It is commonly called Tagara, Tagar, Bala-tagra, Sugandh-bala in Ayurveda. It is considered an important medicinal herb in Ayurveda, and is mentioned in all scriptures of Ayurveda.

The roots of this plant are harvested in the autumn season after the leaves fall down and the roots are dried. Care should be taken while drying because excess heat destroys the active ingredients of the root. The root is dried effectively at temperatures around 40 degrees. Tagara is bitter, sweet, pungent and astringent in taste, and alleviates the vata, pitta and kapha doshas.
